Pitching Mechanics: “What’s the One Thing I Need To Do To Throw Harder?”

I get this question all the time – just like Matt Antonelli does (2b for the San Diego Padres). I made a bunch of videos last night (you can check them out at our YouTube channel page), including a video response to this question. While there’s not “one thing” that is going to make you throw 90 MPH, there’s a common mechanical flaw that I talk about in the video that might help you add a few ticks to your fastball’s velocity.

Matt Antonelli: There’s No Magic Potion

Matt Antonelli, second baseman for the San Diego Padres currently rehabbing his broken wrist, has been doing some video blogs on YouTube. Most aren’t about baseball, but his latest one resonated with me very well. He talks about the “one thing” that people are asking about that makes them throw harder, hit more home runs, run faster, or generally be a better player. Matt’s message is simple: There is no one thing that makes you an elite baseball player, and asking that question is counterproductive.

It’s all about hard work, he says, and “usually, it comes down to who works harder.”

On hard work:

“Some guys take ten ground balls and think they work hard that day, and some take one thousand ground balls and feel like they haven’t worked enough. Try to work harder than everyone else on your team… I think that will work.”

On consistency:

“Consistency… it’s a bunch of ‘one things’ throughout your entire life. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. I’m not Alex Rodriguez, but I’m trying to get there… there was no one thing that got me drafted.”

Just an excellent video, and it’s our message too at Driveline Baseball. Semi-private training involves showing up every day and being there for your workout partners. Join us today.

Link: Absolute Strength vs. Absolute Speed

Eric Cressey made a great post with a video over on his blog talking about Absolute Strength vs. Absolute Speed and when/where you train athletes on that continuum.

Video: How to Shoulder Rehab

Here’s an oldie but a goodie: Diesel Crew’s “How to Shoulder Rehab” video series. We use a lot of the same exercises that Diesel Crew does, and we’ll be shooting a ton of video when we finally move into the NSBA facility (tentatively this weekend). Until then, enjoy this great video and link!

We prefer to use the TRX Suspension Trainer for a lot of the same exercises, and we add Face Pulls, Serratus Strengthening, and Reverse Flys amongst other movements. Of course, we heavily use resistance bands for many of these movements as well – just as shown in the video and with a few changes.
