About
Who is Driveline Baseball?
Driveline Baseball is owned and operated by Kyle Boddy (left) and Jacob Staff (right):

Kyle Boddy has been coaching baseball in the Seattle area for 4 years. After moving here from Cleveland, Ohio, he volunteered to coach Little League for the NorthEast Seattle Little League (NESLL), taking his team of juniors (ages 13-14) to the top four of regionals in his first year. He would go on to coach another year of NESLL with Jacob as his assistant, then moved on to coach many of the same players on the Roosevelt Roughriders Freshman team as an assistant to head coach Matt Nelsen. In 2009, he was promoted to head coach of the RHS Freshmen and brought Jacob on as his assistant, where their team put up a 6-8 record against very difficult KingCo 4A competition (the RHS JV and Varsity combined for just 6 wins in 40 games).
Kyle formed Driveline Baseball in 2008 as a side company to work with his successful pitching mechanics and training blog, Driveline Mechanics. Not satisfied with the basic level of coaching made available by mainstream coaches, Kyle studied research papers and exercise science to develop a specific philosophy to prevent and treat youth pitching injuries. The result? Not a single one of Kyle’s clients has suffered an arm injury, and many have come back from debilitating overuse injuries (UCL rupture, labrum tears) to pitch successfully once again.
After training his first group of clients successfully, he decided to expand the company in 2009 to cover general physical training and obtained his certification to become a personal trainer. He has also taken and passed the National Pitching Association‘s comprehensive online pitching mechanics test. He will be enrolling at Fort Hayes State University to finish his undergraduate degree in Health and Human Performance.
Jacob Staff officially joined the Driveline Baseball team in 2009 but has been coaching with Kyle since 2007. Jacob holds a BA in International Studies and found his love for the game awakened when he studied abroad in Japan. Learning much from the Japanese style of baseball in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league, he brought back valuable experience stateside and has been immersed in the game ever since.
Jacob has developed much of the stability and SPRI band sport-specific training that Driveline Baseball utilizes for its clients to increase their fastball velocity and protect them against arm injuries.
Kyle runs the strength and conditioning training facility in Seattle, WA, and both Jacob and Kyle coach baseball skills on fields throughout the Seattle-Tacoma area.
What are your general philosophies?
We believe that baseball players should be well-rounded athletes that do not neglect training in any of the following areas – speed, power, strength, and stability – regardless of their position. Pitchers, catchers, infielders, outfielders, and designated hitters alike will see diamond-specific performance improve by becoming a better overall athlete. That said, our programs are designed with the principle of specificity in mind, and we will work with you to meet and exceed your goals.
We also believe that pitchers should not suffer traumatic injuries due to poor pitching mechanics or overuse injuries. Driveline Baseball uses high-speed video to break down a pitcher’s throwing mechanics and offer advice to increase fastball velocity and improve their long-term health. We also use the same high-speed video system to analyze a hitter’s swing mechanics and develop a plan to improve bat speed and adjustability at the plate, resulting in higher batting, on-base, and slugging percentages!
Where is your facility?
We currently coach hitting and pitching out of the North Seattle Baseball Association’s (NSBA) facilities located at 8512 20th Ave NE, just off Lake City Way! (Google Maps link) We hope to move our strength and conditioning equipment there by March.
Do you have any testimonials?
Here are a few testimonials from clients of Driveline Baseball:
I have been training with Coach Boddy since little league. He has taken me step by step, in slow and consistent progress to throwing with clean yet productive and successful mechanics. His mechanics are not based on personal experience or bias but on grounded science and his own personal research. He takes an extremely analytical approach to pitching and thoroughly has explained to me why we incorporate certain methods and motions into our mechanics in a very comprehendible way. In addition his mastery of video analysis and use of high-speed camera footage has shown me great visible evidence for the success of his mechanics and has given me direction for where I still need improvement. His safe pitching techniques has kept my arm from hurting since I began to grasp and was able to practice his pitching concepts. Kyle has no personal stakes in the final outcome of me—his student, and purely working on my mechanics for my personal enjoyment and success in the game. His goal is to develop my pitching mechanics as well as a workout routine into one that puts me into good shape, while keeping my body as healthy as possible in an overall effort to put me in a position where I’m able to compete with everyone on the ball field.
